Sadaqah Jariyah for a Gaza Water Well: Ongoing Reward, Verifiable on-Chain
You want a gift that keeps giving after you're gone. Not a one-time meal that's eaten and forgotten, but something that keeps working — a source of water that a mother fills a jerrican from every morning, long after your transfer has cleared. That instinct has a name in Islam: sadaqah jariyah, ongoing charity. And in Gaza right now, few things fit that description as literally as clean water.
I write this from inside Gaza. I run a small, personal initiative — not a big NGO with a marble lobby, but one person delivering aid hand to hand and documenting it. So this isn't a brochure. It's what I actually see when the water arrives, and it's an honest account of the fiqh, the mechanics, and the one thing most donors never get: a way to check for yourself that your money landed.
What "sadaqah jariyah" actually means
The Prophet ﷺ said that when a person dies, their deeds end except for three: ongoing charity (sadaqah jariyah), knowledge that benefits others, and a righteous child who prays for them (Muslim). Scholars have long read the "ongoing charity" of that hadith through a related narration listing things whose reward continues — among them digging a well and letting a river run. Water sits at the center of the concept, not at its edges.
The logic is simple and it's why water wells became the classic example. A meal feeds someone once. A well feeds thirst for years, across dozens of families, whether or not you're alive to see it. Every cup drawn is, in the reward-logic of the hadith, credited back to whoever made the water flow. Al-Nawawi and later jurists treat this category broadly: anything that produces continuing benefit — a well, a fruit tree, a copy of the Qur'an left for others, a bridge — qualifies.
So the appeal isn't sentimental. It's structural. You're buying a stream of benefit, not a moment of it.
Why water is the sharp edge of Gaza's crisis
Before the current war, Gaza already drew most of its drinking water from a single coastal aquifer that had been over-pumped for decades and contaminated with seawater and sewage. The UN's agencies had flagged for years that the vast majority of that groundwater was unfit to drink. Then desalination plants lost power, pipelines were damaged, and fuel to run pumps became scarce. Water didn't just get expensive — in many areas it stopped arriving.
I'm not going to quote you a precise liters-per-person figure, because those numbers shift week to week and I won't pretend to a false precision. If you want the current situation documented by people who track it professionally, read UNICEF — State of Palestine and the situation reports from UN OCHA — occupied Palestinian territory. What I can tell you from the ground is plainer: families ration. Children drink water they know might make them sick because the alternative is drinking nothing. Waterborne illness spreads through crowded shelters. A working water point isn't a comfort here. It's the difference between a healthy child and a dehydrated one.
That's the context in which a well, a tank, or a filtration and trucking operation stops being infrastructure and becomes, quite directly, life extended.
What your donation actually buys
Honesty demands specifics, so here's the range of what "a water well for Gaza" means in practice, because conditions dictate the form:
Repair and reactivation of an existing borehole or pump that fuel or damage knocked offline — often the fastest way to restore water to a neighborhood.
Filtration units that make brackish or contaminated water drinkable, paired with storage tanks families can draw from.
Water trucking to areas where no pipe reaches, filling tanks families and shelters share.
New wells or boreholes where geology and access allow, the closest thing to the classic well of the hadith.
Our Water Relief Project channels donations toward whichever of these puts clean water in the most hands fastest, given what's possible that week. The reward-logic of sadaqah jariyah holds across all of them: as long as people keep drinking from what your gift restored, the benefit — and the reward — keeps running.
The transparency problem, and how we answer it
Here's the uncomfortable truth about charity money: for most donors, the trail goes dark the moment they hit "give." You get a thank-you email. You never see the receipt, the family, or the proof that a middleman didn't take a cut. You're asked to trust.
We do it differently, and the difference is technical, not just rhetorical. Donations come in as USDT on the TRON network (TRC-20), and TRON is a public blockchain. That means every single transfer into and out of the receiving wallet is recorded on a ledger that anyone on earth can inspect, forever, without asking us for permission. No middleman sits between you and the delivery. And you don't have to take my word for any of it — you can read the chain yourself.
How to verify a USDT transfer on Tronscan, step by step
This is the part I wish every donor knew how to do. It takes about two minutes.
Get the transaction hash (TxID) or the wallet address. When you donate in USDT, your wallet or exchange gives you a transaction ID — a long string starting with numbers and letters. We also publish the receiving wallet address.
Go to tronscan.org, the public block explorer for the TRON network. (It's an independent explorer, not owned by us — that's the point.)
Paste the TxID or address into the search bar. For a TxID, you'll see that exact transfer. For a wallet address, you'll see its full history.
Read the transfer. Confirm the amount in USDT, the from and to addresses, the status (a confirmed transfer shows "SUCCESS"), and the timestamp. Check the token contract is the official Tether USDT contract on TRON so you know it's real USDT, not a look-alike token.
Follow the money onward. Click the receiving wallet and watch what leaves it — transfers out to buy fuel, filters, or pay a water supplier. The outflows tell the delivery story the same way the inflow told the donation story.
Do this once and something shifts. You stop hoping your money helped and start seeing it. Alongside the on-chain trail, we document delivery with photos and receipts — but the blockchain is the part no one, including me, can fake.
An honest look at fees
Every donation channel skims something. Pretending otherwise is how donors get misled, so here's the plain comparison.
Traditional charities and card platforms: payment processors typically take a few percent per transaction, and large organizations layer administrative and overhead costs on top — salaries, offices, fundraising expenses. None of that is inherently wrong; big operations cost money to run. But it means a meaningful slice of your gift never reaches Gaza, and you rarely see the breakdown.
Crowdfunding platforms like GoFundMe add their own payment-processing fee per donation. They're legitimate and useful — if you prefer a card and a familiar name, you can support a real, documented Gaza family through our GoFundMe: Help Nidal Zomlot Family Rebuild Their Lives. Just know the platform takes a processing cut, and that's the trade-off for the convenience.
USDT on TRON: the network fee for a TRC-20 transfer is a fraction of a dollar, often just cents. There's no institutional overhead skimming the middle, because there's no institution — it's direct. The trade-off is that you need a crypto wallet and a few minutes to learn the flow. For a gift meant to run for years, I'd argue those minutes are the best-spent of the whole process.
Zakat or sadaqah? Where a water well fits
A fair question from observant donors: can I pay my zakat toward a Gaza water well, or is this only voluntary sadaqah?
Both charity types can flow to Gaza, but they follow different rules. Sadaqah (including sadaqah jariyah) is voluntary, unrestricted, and can fund anything beneficial — a well is a textbook fit, and its ongoing-reward status is exactly why donors reach for water. Zakat is obligatory, and the Qur'an restricts it to eight categories (Surah At-Tawbah 9:60), most relevantly the poor and the needy. A water project can be zakat-eligible when it directly relieves the poor and the funds actually reach eligible recipients — many scholars permit zakat for essential water access to needy people on that basis. Because scholarly views differ on the details of funding shared infrastructure with zakat, the clean approach is to tell us your intention. If you're giving zakat, say so, and we direct it to where eligible needy families benefit directly. If it's sadaqah jariyah, the whole menu is open.
When in doubt, ask a scholar you trust about your specific situation. I can tell you how the money is used; the ruling on your particular obligation is theirs to give.
Red flags: how to tell a real water appeal from a scam
Gaza's suffering has, predictably, drawn opportunists. Protect your charity. Here's what I'd check before giving anywhere — including here.
No verifiable trail. If an appeal can't show you where money goes — on-chain records, receipts, photos, named deliveries — treat vagueness as a warning, not modesty.
Pressure and manufactured urgency. "Send now or a child dies tonight" is emotional manipulation. Real need is urgent, but honest appeals let you verify first.
Impossible promises. Anyone guaranteeing a fixed dollar figure builds a specific well by a specific date in an active war zone is overselling. Conditions here change hourly.
Round-number "proof" with no source. Fabricated statistics are a tell. Trust appeals that point you to independent documentation — like ReliefWeb — Palestine — rather than inventing their own numbers.
Anonymous everything. You should be able to see who receives, what was delivered, and a way to confirm it. If every layer is a black box, walk away.
Apply these to me too. That's the point of building on a public blockchain: I'm asking you to check, not to trust blindly.
Common objections, answered plainly
"Crypto feels risky or shady." The volatility fear doesn't apply here — USDT is a stablecoin pegged to the US dollar, so a dollar sent is roughly a dollar received. And the public ledger makes crypto more transparent than a bank wire, not less. You can audit it. You can't audit most charities.
"Will it really reach Gaza?" That's the exact question the on-chain record exists to answer. You watch the funds arrive and watch them spent. Delivery is documented on top with photos and receipts.
"I'm not wealthy — is a small gift worth it?" A well doesn't ask how much any single person gave. Many modest gifts restore one water point, and every family drinking from it credits reward back to all of them. Small and ongoing beats large and one-time.
Start your ongoing charity today
A water well is the oldest form of sadaqah jariyah for a reason: it keeps working when you can't. In Gaza, it's also among the most urgent, because thirst here is not metaphorical.
If this is the gift you want to make, fund the Water Relief Project directly, or browse active campaigns to see everything currently running. When you're ready, donate to Gaza now — and then, please, look up your transfer on-chain. Watch the water reach a family. That's the reward already beginning to run.
Frequently asked questions
Does building a water well count as sadaqah jariyah?
Yes. Water is the classic example of sadaqah jariyah. The Prophet ﷺ named ongoing charity among the three deeds whose reward continues after death, and jurists list digging a well and letting water run as prime cases. As long as people keep drinking from what your gift restored, the reward keeps running.
Can I pay my zakat toward a Gaza water well?
Often yes, when the project directly relieves the poor and needy and funds reach eligible recipients — many scholars permit zakat for essential water access on that basis. Because views differ on funding shared infrastructure with zakat, tell us your intention when you give so we direct zakat where needy families benefit directly, and ask a scholar you trust about your specific case.
How do I verify my USDT donation actually reached Gaza?
Take your transaction ID or the receiving wallet address, go to the independent explorer tronscan.org, and paste it in. You'll see the amount, sender and receiver addresses, a SUCCESS status, and the timestamp — then you can follow outgoing transfers to see funds spent on fuel, filters, and water. The public blockchain is proof no one can fake.
Why USDT instead of a bank transfer or card?
Two reasons: cost and transparency. A TRC-20 network fee is often just cents, with no institutional overhead skimming the middle, so more of your gift reaches Gaza. And every transfer is recorded on a public ledger you can audit yourself — something a bank wire or most charities can't offer. USDT is a stablecoin pegged to the dollar, so it doesn't swing in value.
Is a small donation still worthwhile for a water well?
Very much so. A well doesn't ask how much any single person gave — many modest gifts together restore one water point, and every family that drinks from it credits reward back to all the givers. A small, ongoing gift toward something that keeps working beats a large one-time gift that's spent and gone.
