Give Zakat to Gaza: Is It Allowed, How Much, and How to Make Sure It Arrives (A Practical Fiqh Guide)
August 14, 2026
You calculated your zakat this year and paused on one question: does Gaza actually qualify, and if I give, will the money reach a family or vanish into overhead? I'm writing this from inside Gaza, and I'll answer both honestly — the fiqh and the plumbing.
The short version first, because you're busy and the obligation is real. Yes, giving your zakat to the people of Gaza is not only permitted, it lands squarely inside the categories the Qur'an names for zakat. The harder question isn't whether — it's how you make sure it arrives. That second half is where most people get burned, and it's the half almost no charity page talks about.
Does Gaza qualify for zakat? Start with the eight categories
Zakat isn't a general donation you can spend anywhere. Allah restricted it to eight named recipients in Surah At-Tawbah (9:60): the poor (al-fuqara), the needy (al-masakin), those employed to collect it, those whose hearts are to be reconciled, freeing captives, those in debt (al-gharimun), in the cause of Allah (fi sabilillah), and the stranded traveler (ibn as-sabil). If your recipient doesn't fall into one of these, it isn't valid zakat — it's a good deed, but a different one.
Here's why Gaza doesn't just barely fit — it fits several categories at once.
The poor and the needy (al-fuqara wal-masakin). This is the plainest one. A family whose home is rubble, whose income evaporated, who cannot secure a day's food or clean water, is the textbook definition of faqir and miskin. The classical scholars defined the needy as someone who lacks sufficient means for their basic necessities. That describes the majority of households around me right now.
Those in debt (al-gharimun). Many families here borrowed to survive — for a surgery, a burial, a sack of flour bought at wartime prices. Zakat is explicitly meant to lift such debts.
Displacement has turned people who own property elsewhere into strangers with nothing on hand — cut off from their own money and homes. Several scholars extend to exactly this situation.
The stranded traveler (ibn as-sabil).
ibn as-sabil
So the eligibility question isn't close. The reason people still hesitate is not fiqh — it's trust. They've heard the stories: donations pooled, skimmed, delayed for months, or spent on the machinery of the organization rather than the family. That fear is legitimate, and pretending otherwise insults your intelligence.
How much zakat do you owe? The mechanics, quickly
If you're here to give, you probably already know the outline, but let me set it down cleanly so your calculation is sound before you send anything.
Zakat on cash, gold, silver, and trade goods is 2.5% of the wealth you've held for one full lunar year (a hawl), provided your total reaches the nisab — the minimum threshold. The nisab is the value of 85 grams of gold or 595 grams of silver, whichever your madhhab or your circumstances direct you to use. Many scholars today favor the silver nisab for cash because it's lower and captures more wealth into the obligation, which is closer to zakat's purpose of circulating money to the poor.
The arithmetic is simple. Total your zakatable assets — cash on hand and in accounts, gold and silver, money owed to you that you expect back, business inventory at current value. Subtract immediate debts you owe. If what remains sits above the nisab and a lunar year has passed over it, you owe 2.5% of it. On $10,000 of eligible wealth, that's $250. On $40,000, it's $1,000.
Two practical notes people miss. First, use the current gold or silver price on the day you calculate, not a figure from last year. Second, zakat is due when the year completes, but you may pay it earlier — and in a year like this one, earlier is a mercy that keeps a family fed now rather than in three months.
Zakat, sadaqah, and where each one lands
People conflate these, then feel uneasy about whether they've fulfilled the obligation. Keep them separate.
Zakat is the obligatory 2.5%, restricted to the eight categories, and it must reach an actual eligible person or be spent on their behalf — it cannot fund a building, a salary for a wealthy administrator, or general "awareness." It has to transfer ownership to the poor (this is the fiqh principle of tamlik).
Sadaqah is voluntary and unrestricted. It can build a well, buy an ambulance, sponsor an orphan's schooling, or simply feed a hungry person — no nisab, no percentage, no category list.
Why does this matter for Gaza specifically? Because the honest way to give zakat is to hand it to a mechanism that puts the full amount into an eligible person's hands, with nothing shaved off for operations. If a fund tells you "we take 15% for administration," a portion of your zakat never reached a faqir — and scholars differ sharply on whether that even discharges your obligation. The cleanest path is a model where 100% of the zakat transfers to the family, and any operating costs are covered separately by voluntary sadaqah. That's the standard I hold myself to here.
The part nobody explains: proving the money arrived
This is the reason I built the way I did, and it's the heart of what makes giving zakat to Gaza trustworthy instead of a leap of faith.
Most donation flows are a black box. You send money to a platform; the platform tells you it helped "thousands"; you never see your specific gift touch a specific family. For a fard obligation like zakat — where you're answerable to Allah for whether it actually reached an eligible recipient — that opacity is a real problem, not a minor inconvenience.
FundGaza (رواء غزة) is a personal initiative, not a large NGO. I live here. I take your zakat as USDT on the TRON network (TRC-20), deliver it directly to a family I've verified, and every single transfer is permanently recorded on the public blockchain. You don't take my word for it — you check the ledger yourself.
Here's exactly how you verify a transfer, step by step, so "transparency" stops being a slogan:
Get the transaction hash (TxID). After any USDT-TRC20 transfer, the sender's wallet produces a 64-character transaction ID. When your zakat is delivered onward to a family, that delivery also has its own TxID, which I publish.
Open Tronscan. Go to tronscan.org, the public block explorer for the TRON network. It isn't owned by me or by any charity — it's a neutral, public record.
Paste the TxID into the search bar. Hit enter.
Read the receipt. You'll see the exact amount of USDT, the sending wallet address, the receiving wallet address, the timestamp, and a status that says Confirmed or Success. That confirmation means the network — thousands of independent nodes — agreed the transfer happened. No one can fake it or reverse it.
Cross-check the amount and time against what was reported. If I say a family received 200 USDT on a given day, the chain will show 200 USDT, to a wallet, at that time. If it doesn't match, you've caught it instantly.
That's the whole point of putting zakat on-chain: you can audit the obligation you're responsible for. I wrote a fuller walkthrough of this verification method — including how to read wallet histories — in this guide on how to donate to Gaza safely. Read it before you send anything, to anyone, anywhere.
What your zakat actually buys here
Abstract sums don't move people; specifics do, because they're true. In Gaza right now, your zakat converts into concrete survival.
Clean water is the one nobody outside expects to be a crisis, but it is the crisis. Piped water is contaminated or gone, and families ration what they can carry. A steady water supply for a household is not a luxury here — it's the line between health and cholera. That's the whole reason for the Water Relief Project, which puts zakat and sadaqah directly into water for specific families.
Food is the other daily emergency. Flour prices spiked to numbers that would sound like a typo abroad. A month's food basket — flour, oil, lentils, canned goods, whatever the market actually holds that week — keeps a family off the edge. The Food Basket Project exists for exactly that, delivered hand to hand, documented with photos and the recipient's own confirmation.
And sometimes a family needs to rebuild an entire life, not just get through a week. One case I've been closely involved with is the effort to Help Nidal Zomlot Family Rebuild Their Lives — a longer-horizon appeal for a household that lost nearly everything.
Red flags: how to spot a fund that will waste your zakat
Your obligation isn't discharged by intending well — it's discharged by the money reaching an eligible person. So screen hard. These are the warning signs I'd tell my own family to watch for:
No verifiable proof of delivery. Glossy impact photos are not proof your money arrived. A blockchain transaction hash is. If a fund can't show you your money moving, treat the claim as marketing.
Vague administrative cuts. "A portion covers our costs" with no number, or a double-digit percentage skimmed from zakat, should stop you. Ask precisely: what percentage of zakat reaches the recipient? The answer should be 100%.
No named, real people behind it. Anonymous accounts asking for crypto are the classic scam. You should be able to see who is receiving, and where.
Pressure and manufactured urgency without substance. Real need doesn't need a countdown timer and a guilt script. It needs a clear ask and a clear receipt.
They discourage questions. Anyone handling your zakat should welcome you checking the chain. If verification annoys them, that tells you something.
I'd rather you interrogate me and give with certainty than give quickly and wonder for a year whether your fard was fulfilled.
Is it better to give zakat locally or send it to Gaza?
A fair question, and the fiqh has a real answer. The default preference among many scholars is to distribute zakat among the poor of your own locality first, because your neighbors have a claim on you. But this is a preference, not a hard prohibition, and it is explicitly set aside when the need elsewhere is greater and more severe. Transferring zakat to a region of acute catastrophe — famine, siege, mass displacement — is permitted and, in the view of many contemporary scholars, encouraged, because zakat exists to relieve the most desperate first. Few situations on earth today meet that bar more clearly than Gaza. If your local poor are cared for, sending your zakat here is on the strongest possible footing.
For deeper context, and then a decision
If you want to ground your giving in the documented scale of need rather than my word alone, the neutral bodies tracking the humanitarian situation are worth ten minutes: the UN OCHA occupied Palestinian territory office publishes situation reports, and ReliefWeb — Palestine aggregates verified updates from agencies on the ground. Read them, then come back and act.
You did the calculation. You know the amount. The category is settled — Gaza's families are fuqara, masakin, gharimun, and stranded ibn as-sabil many times over. The only remaining variable is whether your 2.5% reaches a real person and whether you can prove it did. On that, I've handed you the tools: give it directly, take the transaction hash, check it on Tronscan yourself.
When you're ready, you can donate to Gaza now or browse active campaigns and choose the family or need that pulls at you. Send the zakat. Keep the receipt. And this year, for once, know exactly where it landed.
Frequently asked questions
Is it permissible to give my zakat to the people of Gaza?
Yes. Gazans fall into several of the eight zakat categories at once: the poor and needy (al-fuqara wal-masakin) who lack food and shelter, the debtors (al-gharimun) who borrowed to survive, and the stranded (ibn as-sabil) who are cut off from their own wealth. Transferring zakat to a region of greater, more severe need is permitted and, for many scholars, encouraged.
How much zakat do I owe and how do I calculate it?
You owe 2.5% of your zakatable wealth (cash, gold, silver, trade goods) once it reaches the nisab and a lunar year has passed over it. The nisab is the value of 85g of gold or 595g of silver. Total your zakatable assets, subtract immediate debts, and if the remainder is above nisab, pay 2.5%. Example: on $40,000, that is $1,000.
What is the difference between zakat and sadaqah when giving to Gaza?
Zakat is the obligatory 2.5%, restricted to the eight categories, and must transfer ownership to an actual eligible person with no administrative cut. Sadaqah is voluntary and unrestricted — it can build a well or buy equipment. The cleanest zakat model delivers 100% to the family, with operating costs covered separately by sadaqah.
How can I verify my zakat actually reached a family in Gaza?
Through the on-chain transaction hash. Zakat is sent as USDT on the TRON network (TRC-20), and every transfer has a 64-character transaction ID (TxID). Paste it into the neutral public explorer tronscan.org, and you'll see the exact amount, the sending and receiving wallets, the timestamp, and a Confirmed status. Cross-check it against what was reported — any mismatch is caught instantly.
Is it better to give zakat locally or send it to Gaza?
The default preference is to distribute zakat among your local poor first, but that is a preference, not a prohibition, and it is set aside when need elsewhere is greater and more severe. If your local poor are cared for, sending zakat to Gaza — with its siege, famine, and displacement — is on the strongest possible footing, in the view of many contemporary scholars.
